Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is the most common of the rare cutaneous malignancies. AFX usually involves sites of high cumulative ultraviolet exposure and is rarely located in the periocular region. We are aware of 7 case reports in the literature, of periocular AFX, one of which was treated with Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS).

Find out about Mohs micrographic surgery, a procedure that removes skin cancer angiosarcoma, atypical fibroxanthoma, and other cancerous skin tumors.

Sutures and staples were removed ten days later and follow-up was conducted six weeks Low grade malignant cutaneous neoplasm. Usually presents on the sun exposed skin (e.g. head and neck) of elderly patients with a slight male predominance. Histologically, a dermal based, well circumscribed tumor composed of pleomorphic, irregularly arranged, spindled to epithelioid cells with numerous mitotic figures. A comparison of Mohs micrographic surgery and wide excision for the treatment of atypical fibroxanthoma.

Tumors are excised, or Mohs micrographic surgery—in which tissue borders are progressively excised until specimens are tumor-free (as determined by microscopic examination during surgery)—is done if clinically appropriate. For high-risk tumors, or those in cosmetically sensitive areas the leading treatment option is Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS).

Background: Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is a fibrohistiocytic tumor with relatively high local recurrence rates but low metastatic potential. Wide local excision (WLE) and Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) are common treatments, although no consensus exists regarding optimal therapy. BACKGROUND: Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is an uncommon spindle cell neoplasm occurring most often in actinically damaged skin of elderly patients.

Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) and pleomorphic dermal sarcoma (PDS) tumors share many clinical, etiologic, and histologic features and likely represent components of a tumor spectrum. In dermatologic oncology, differentiating between AFX and PDS is pivotal as tumors with histological features consistent with PDS are more likely to behave in a clinically aggressive manner. Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is a tumor that occurs primarily in older individuals after the skin of the head and neck has been damaged significantly by sun exposure and/or therapeutic radiation.
