Cuvier’s are one of the best-known beaked whales as they live throughout the world and have been the focus of whale research efforts in areas where deep waters are found close to shore such as Hawaii, the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean and the Bahamas. However, little is known about the life history of Cuvier’s beaked whales. Gray's Beaked Whale is the second-most commonly stranded of the beaked whales in Australia, and is the most common beaked whale to strand in New Zealand. Strandings of up to 28 individuals have occurred, suggesting this species may be more gregarious than some of the other beaked whales.

Beaked whales are the collective name of the cetacean suborder beaked whales. It is currently representing a total of 22 species in 6 genera, accounting for around 25% of the known extant cetaceans. Beaked whales mainly live in deep waters and perform long-term deep diving for food. Beaked whales are generally found in deep water areas off the continental shelves, often along underwater canyons as some species dive down to several thousand meters when foraging. In their search for deep water squid and fish prey, beaked whales perform prolonged dives and 60-minute dives are not uncommon. Beaked whale definition is - any of a family (Ziphiidae) of toothed whales that have a relatively long, narrow snout suggestive of a beak, that in the males often have a large bulging forehead, and that unlike other whales lack a notch on the fluke.
